Short answer
A replica Luminor Marina Chronograph copies the Panerai Luminor case and adds a chronograph movement. Common builds use a 44 mm steel case, a 24 mm lug width, and a 28,800 vph automatic movement from the Valjoux 7750 family. Prices run $150 to $500. Case thickness, subdial spacing, and lume are the parts that differ most from the genuine watch.
What the genuine watch is
Panerai sells chronograph versions of the Luminor Marina in several sizes. The 44 mm references dominate. Some years use 40 mm and 42 mm cases. All of them share the crown-protecting bridge and the lever that locks the crown to the case. Water resistance is 100 m on most references. The crystal is sapphire, cut about 2.5 mm to 3 mm thick. Dial layout changes by reference: two subdials at 3 and 9 o'clock, or three subdials at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock.
Panerai reference numbers changed with each series. PAM 00196, PAM 00286, and PAM 01109 use different movements and different dial layouts. Confirm the number before you compare a replica to a photo.
Movements used in replicas
- Asia Valjoux 7750 (A7750): automatic, 28,800 vph, 40 to 44 hours of reserve. The bare 7750 is 7.9 mm thick, so the case grows with it.
- Seagull ST19: hand wound, 21,600 vph, column wheel. Found in cheaper builds. No rotor, so the case can stay thinner.
- Cloned or rebuilt ETA 7753: less common, higher cost. The date corrector sits at 10 o'clock on the 7753.
The 7750 family stacks a chronograph plate on top of the winding train. That stack adds height. A genuine Luminor chronograph case runs about 15 mm to 16 mm thick. Many replicas run 1 mm to 2 mm thicker.
Dial, hands, and lume
Genuine sandwich dials have a cut upper plate over a lume-filled lower plate. Replicas use the same idea. The gap between the plates is wider on cheap builds. Hands on the genuine watch are polished steel with a lume fill. Replica hands show a rougher edge on the small second hand and the chronograph hands.
Lume is the fastest tell. Genuine Super-LumiNova glows for hours after a charge. Replica lume charges dimmer and fades in a shorter time. Charge both under the same lamp for 60 seconds and compare.
Checks before you buy
- Ask for the factory name and the movement code. No answer, no sale.
- Ask for a photo of the caseback and the crown bridge. The lever must lock the crown against the case.
- Ask for case thickness with calipers.
- Ask if the chronograph resets to zero. A 7750 that does not reset needs service.
- Ask for the date position. On a 7753 based build the corrector is a recessed button at 10 o'clock.
Water and service
Replica cases do not carry a factory water rating. Gaskets vary by build. Do not swim with one. A watchmaker can pressure test a case for a small fee. Service on an A7750 runs $80 to $150 in the US, and many shops refuse the work.
Legal note
A replica is not a Panerai. Selling one as genuine is counterfeiting and is a crime in the US. Customs can seize shipments. Resale value is near zero.
