A replica Luminor Marina 3 Days is a copy of the Panerai Luminor Marina 1950 3 Days Automatic. The "3 Days" in the name is a power reserve number. The watch runs about 72 hours on one full wind. Most replicas use an automatic movement built to copy the Panerai P.9000 or P.9010 layout.
Where the 3 Days name comes from
Panerai launched the Luminor Marina 1950 3 Days Automatic in 2007. Reference PAM00312 was an early model. The in-house P.9000 caliber carried two mainspring barrels and 72 hours of reserve. Older Panerai watches used ETA or Valjoux bases with a 40 to 48 hour reserve. The 3 day figure became the selling point, and replica makers copied the label.
Movement tiers in replicas
Three tiers exist, and the tier decides the reserve:
- Entry: Asian automatic, 21,600 vph, 38 to 42 hours reserve.
- Mid: decorated copy of the P.9000, 55 to 62 hours reserve.
- Top: clone P.9000 or P.9010, two barrels, true 72 hour reserve.
Ask the seller for a movement photo. A two-barrel clone shows two bridges under the rotor. A single-barrel movement cannot reach 72 hours, so the claim fails on a bench test.
Case and dial specs
The main references sit at 44 mm with a 1950 style case. The crown guard lever locks the crown. Dials use the sandwich build: a top plate with cut numbers over a lume layer. Hand sets are pencil shape on the 1950 cases and stick shape on the older Luminor cases. Casebacks are solid on some references and sapphire display on others.
Testing the reserve
- Wind the watch 40 full turns or wear it 8 hours.
- Set the time against a reference clock.
- Let it sit dial up for 72 hours.
- Check the reading at 24, 48, and 72 hours.
A healthy clone loses under 15 seconds a day and still runs at hour 70. A watch that stops at hour 40 has one barrel or a weak mainspring.
Checks before buying
Confirm the crown guard lever snaps and holds. Check the date change at midnight. Verify the rotor engraving matches the caliber the seller names. Water resistance on replicas is not guaranteed, so do not swim with one. Genuine Panerai lists 300 m on the Luminor Marina, and no replica factory certifies that figure. Replicas are not genuine Panerai watches and carry no factory warranty.
