IW544781 is an IWC reference number from the Portugieser line. The 5447 group uses a hand-wound movement with a tourbillon, a large round case, and a small seconds sub-dial. IWC lists this family in gold and platinum. Replica copies of the reference sell for $280 to $900. The movement inside decides the price.
One warning: exact variant specs for every 5447 sub-reference are not published in a single place. Confirm the dial layout, case metal, and case size against the original before you compare a replica. Caseback engravings on copies are often wrong.
What the reference number tells you
IWC builds reference numbers in blocks. 544781 splits into 5447 plus a variant code. The first four digits set the model family. The last two set the case metal, dial color, and strap. Two watches can share the same model number and look nothing alike.
What replica versions contain
Most copies of this reference use a 42 mm to 44 mm case in steel with gold plating. Crystal is sapphire on better builds, mineral glass on cheap ones. Straps are leather with a deployant clasp or a pin buckle.
Movements fall into three groups:
- Seagull or Hangzhou hand-wound tourbillon, $600 to $900
- Modified automatic with a fake tourbillon bridge, $350 to $500
- Quartz with a decorated plate, $280 to $350
A real tourbillon cage rotates once per minute. Look through the aperture and time it against a phone stopwatch. A faux bridge does not move.
Checks before you pay
- Case diameter and lug width, measured, not quoted
- Caseback text: reference, metal, and serial placement
- Crown operation: hand-wound copies need 20 to 30 turns for full power
- Water resistance claim: 30 m on most copies, no dive rating
- Return window and payment method
U.S. import rules
U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit watches at any port. A shipment can be held, destroyed, or returned at the buyer's cost. Federal law bars selling counterfeit goods, and the Federal Trade Commission treats listings that hide copy status as deceptive. Keep that risk in mind before ordering.
Power reserve on a hand-wound copy runs 40 to 60 hours in most cases. Timing accuracy on a Chinese tourbillon copy lands within 15 to 30 seconds a day. Service in the U.S. for these movements is limited. Few watchmakers stock parts.
