What a replica IW3716 is
The IW3716 is the current reference family for the IWC Portugieser Chronograph. A replica IW3716 copies the case, dial, and strap of that watch and replaces the IWC movement with a third-party calibre. The genuine case measures 41 mm across and 13.1 mm thick. Water resistance is 30 m. The dial has two subdials: a 30-minute chronograph counter at 12 o'clock and running seconds at 6 o'clock, with a date window at 3. IWC uses the Calibre 69355, an automatic column-wheel chronograph with a 46-hour power reserve and a 4 Hz beat rate.
Movements found in copies
- Asian 7750 automatic. The most common base. Subdial and date positions land close to the genuine layout. Case thickness often runs 0.5 mm to 1 mm over spec.
- Seagull ST19 and other hand-wound calibres. Lower cost, no rotor, different case back profile.
- Quartz. Cheapest tier. The chronograph second hand ticks once per second instead of sweeping.
Checks before you buy
- Subdial function. The 12 o'clock counter should jump one step per minute when the chronograph runs. A frozen subdial means a decorative module.
- Subdial placement. Both subdials sit on the vertical center line of the dial. Off-center subdials point to a mismatched movement.
- Case thickness. Ask the seller for measured numbers. 13.1 mm is the genuine figure for steel models.
- Date aperture. It sits at 3 o'clock. Cheap copies use a wider window and heavier numerals.
- Case back engraving. Reference and serial stamping should be sharp and centered.
- Crystal. The genuine watch uses sapphire with an anti-reflective coating. Mineral glass scratches within weeks.
Price tiers
Replica IW3716 prices cluster in three bands. Quartz copies sell under $100. Automatic Asian 7750 builds run about $150 to $400. Higher-grade copies with a decorated movement, sapphire crystal, and cleaner dial printing run $400 to $800. Genuine steel IW3716 models list near $8,000 from IWC. That gap is the reason the reference is copied.
Legal and practical notes
Counterfeit goods are illegal to traffic in the United States under 18 U.S.C. Section 2320, and customs officers can seize shipments. Replicas hold no resale value. IWC will not service or authenticate a copy, so repairs go to independent watchmakers. Buyers who want a serviceable watch at the $400 to $800 level often compare against used entry-level chronographs from mainstream brands, which keep value and carry factory parts support.
