The short answer

Misleading claims on replica watch listings cluster around five items: the movement, the case metal, the water resistance rating, the factory name, and the label "1:1". Each item can be checked with one specific question. A seller who answers in writing with model numbers is more reliable than one who answers with adjectives.

Movement claims

"Swiss movement" and "Swiss made" are not the same claim. Swiss law sets criteria for the "Swiss made" label on a watch. A replica assembled in Asia with one Swiss-supplied part does not meet them. Ask for the movement caliber number, for example 2836-2 or a 3135 clone, and for a photo of the rotor engraving. A price under $200 with a "Swiss tourbillon" claim is not credible. A tourbillon cage takes hours to assemble and regulate.

Case metal claims

316L and 904L stainless steel both appear in replica listings. 904L costs more and machines harder, which shows in the price. "Solid gold" on a replica priced in the hundreds of dollars is false. Gold content is measured in grams and priced by weight. Gold plating is measured in microns. Ask for the plating thickness in µm. Values under 3 µm wear through at the lugs and the clasp.

Water resistance

A rating of 3 ATM means resistance to 30 m of static pressure in a lab. It does not mean diving to 30 m. ISO 22810 defines the terms and the test conditions for water resistant watches. Many replica cases pass a dry pressure test and fail in salt water because the crown gasket runs dry. Ask if the case was pressure tested, and at what value.

"1:1" and factory names

"1:1" states a dimensional match. It is not a standard, and no third party certifies it. Factory names in the replica market are trade nicknames, not registered makers, and the same name gets applied to different builds. Ask for case diameter in mm, lug width, and thickness. Compare those numbers to the published specs of the watch being copied.

Crystal and lume

Sapphire and mineral glass look alike in photos. Sapphire rates 9 on the Mohs scale; mineral glass rates about 5.5. Ask which one the build uses and get the answer in writing. Lume claims are testable at home. Charge the dial under a lamp for 60 seconds, then check the glow after 30 minutes.

Checks before payment

  • Movement caliber number, in writing.
  • Case metal grade, 316L or 904L, in writing.
  • Water resistance test result and test value.
  • Case diameter, lug width, and thickness in mm.
  • Crystal type.
  • Return address and return window.

Legal note

Counterfeit goods that carry a trademark are subject to seizure at the US border. Selling a counterfeit as genuine is a separate offense. Listings that present the brand name as the product name carry more legal risk than listings that describe a design reference.
