The pick, up front
Go with the 37mm Portofino automatic in steel, white dial, gold-tone markers, black leather strap. Of everything sold as a Portofino copy, that one handles the small dress-watch brief best. The 29mm original is thin, quiet and almost bezel-free, and the 37 keeps that shape while giving you an automatic movement instead of the quartz unit most 29mm copies ship with.
Proportions decide this more than the logo on the dial. A 29mm case on a 6.5 inch wrist reads like jewelry, which is fine if that is the look you want. On a 7 inch wrist it goes small and the dial gets crowded. The 37 splits the difference and wears well on most wrists between 6 and 7.5 inches.
Why it wins
- Case sits around 37mm and roughly 9mm thick, so it slips under a shirt cuff
- Applied markers instead of printed ones, which is the first thing that gives a cheap copy away in photos
- Automatic movement with a sweeping seconds hand, no quartz tick
- 18mm lugs, so aftermarket leather and mesh straps are easy to source
- Dial layout stays clean: three hands, date at 3, nothing else
If that one is gone
Option 2: Portofino Chronograph 39
Same family, more presence. Two subdials, a date, a thicker case. It suits a 7 inch wrist and up, and it hides the flaws that show on a bare three-hand dial because there is more going on. Downside is the height. It will not disappear under a tight cuff the way the 37 does.

Option 3: Cartier Ballon Bleu 33
Different animal, same job. Rounded case, fluted crown guard, blue cabochon. If the flat Portofino bezel feels too plain next to your other watches, this gives you the dress-watch feel with more visual interest. The 33 wears closer to a 35 because of the curve of the case.
Option 4: Omega De Ville Prestige 36.8
The safest dial in this list. Thin bezel, slim markers, a date at 6 on most references. It reads as a plain office watch and draws almost no attention, which is the point for a lot of buyers.
Option 5: Tank Must small
Rectangular instead of round. If you are chasing the 29 because you want something that looks formal and small, a Tank shape does that better than a shrunken round case. It also fits flat against the wrist.
What I check before paying
- Movement type. Ask directly. Quartz 29mm copies are common and often priced like automatics.
- Dial photos taken at an angle. Applied markers cast a small shadow, printed ones do not.
- Caseback engraving. Shallow, soft lettering is a tell.
- Strap hardware. Stitching and buckle finish matter more at this size than the case back.
- Photos of the actual unit, not a stock image of the genuine watch.
Sizing notes
Measure your wrist before you pick. Under 6.5 inches, the 33mm Ballon Bleu or the small Tank will look more natural than any 37. Over 7 inches, skip the 29mm entirely. Also factor in strap thickness. A 37mm dress watch on a thick padded strap wears a full size larger than the same watch on a thin one, and swapping straps is the cheapest way to change how a copy sits on your wrist.
