Short answer
A fake Breguet Classique dress replica is a copy of a Swiss watch that sells new for $18,000 to $40,000. Copies sell for $150 to $1,200. No copy uses a Breguet movement. Case thickness on most copies runs 1 to 2 mm off the original. Importing a copy into the United States is not the same as owning a legal Breguet.
What the Classique line is
Breguet started in Paris in 1775. Abraham-Louis Breguet set three design marks that the brand still uses: a fluted caseband, welded lugs, and engine-turned dials. The Classique collection carries all three. Main references:
Breguet Classique Style Dress Watches: Comparison Review
- Classique 5177: 38 mm case, 8.8 mm thick, Calibre 777Q, 55-hour power reserve, silvered gold dial with Clous de Paris guilloché.
- Classique 5157: 38 mm case, extra-thin Calibre 502.3, movement height near 2.4 mm.
- Classique 5140 and 7137: 40 mm and 39 mm, small seconds, moon phase on the 7137.
Retail on a white gold 5177 has sat near $27,000 in the last five years. Resale is lower.
What copies get right
The best copies match the outline. Case diameter, lug shape, and dial layout read correct from a few feet away. Mid-tier copies use a stainless steel case with gold plating. Sapphire crystal and a display caseback are common. Most run a Chinese automatic or a Swiss ETA clone.

What copies get wrong
Engine turning. The real dial is cut on a rose engine, so the pattern has depth and moves with light. Copies stamp or print the pattern. It looks flat.
Hands. Breguet hands are blued steel. Copies paint them blue. Under a loupe the paint shows brush marks and no heat scale.
Thickness. A 5177 copy often measures 10 to 11 mm against the real 8.8 mm. Dress watches show that gap at a shirt cuff.
Movement. No copy has a Breguet 777Q. Sellers fit a Miyota, a Seagull, or a Hangzhou movement and add engraved bridges or a rotor plate. The balance wheel and escapement do not match.
Dial text. Font weight, spacing, and the Breguet secret signature differ. Genuine pieces carry a hidden signature in the dial or the flange. Most copies do not place it at the correct spot.
Price bands
- $150 to $300: mineral glass, plated case, quartz or basic automatic.
- $300 to $700: sapphire crystal, steel case, better dial print.
- $700 to $1,200: high-tier copies with a closer case profile and a decorated movement.
Past $1,200 the extra cost buys marketing, not parts.
Checks before buying
- Ask for a caliper photo of case thickness.
- Ask for a macro shot of the dial at 12 o'clock and of the hands.
- Ask for a movement photo with the caseback off.
- Ask for the lug width in mm.
- Get the return window in writing.
If a seller refuses any of these, the listing is guesswork.
Legal and shipping notes
Breguet is a registered trademark. US Customs can seize counterfeit watches under 19 U.S.C. § 1526. Willful use of a counterfeit mark can carry statutory damages up to $2 million per mark under 15 U.S.C. § 1117. A copy bought for personal wear is still a copy, and selling one as a genuine Breguet is fraud.
Shipping from China to the US has run two to six weeks in the last few years. Seizure rates differ by port. CBP does not publish live numbers on how often a single domestic package is opened, so that figure is unknown.
