Fake IWC Watches Review: Tiers, Movements, Prices
IWC Schaffhausen builds the Pilot's Watch, Portugieser, and Portofino families. Copies of those three families fill most listings. Quality splits into three tiers. Price tracks tier. Here is the pick, then the other two.
Our pick: Mark XVIII Pilot's Watch, mid tier
The Mark XVIII measures 40 mm across and 11 mm thick. The dial has three hands, a date at 3, and no chronograph. That layout leaves nothing to hide. A mid tier copy costs $280 to $420. It carries a Miyota 9015 or a 2824 clone at 28,800 vph. Sapphire crystal, printed dial, brushed case sides, signed crown. Genuine references for this model include IW327001, IW327002, IW327003, and IW327004.
Check four details. The date wheel sits centered under the window. The crown guard has a flat inner face. The crystal has inner anti reflective coating, so the dial reads black from an angle. The rotor winds with light wrist motion.
Tier 1: budget copies, $80 to $160
These use mineral glass, stamped dials, and 21,600 vph movements with no hacking seconds. Lume fades in under 30 minutes. Date fonts run wide. Case backs stamp the wrong reference number. Water resistance past splash contact is a claim, not a spec.
Tier 2: mid tier, $250 to $450
This band covers the Mark XVIII, the Portofino 40, and some Portugieser Chronograph builds. Sapphire crystal with inner AR coating. Miyota 9015 at 24 jewels and 42 hour reserve, or an ETA 2824 clone at 25 jewels and 38 hour reserve. Applied markers on the Portugieser. Correct dial print weight.
Tier 3: top tier, $480 to $750
Top tier covers the Pilot's Chronograph 41 and the Big Pilot 43. The chronograph runs a 7750 based movement at 28,800 vph with a 12 hour counter. The case measures 41 mm by 14.5 mm, within a fraction of the original. Deployant clasp, correct engraving, Super-LumiNova BGW9.
Checks that separate the tiers
- Crystal: sapphire resists keys and coins. Mineral glass picks up scratches in weeks.
- Movement: 28,800 vph beats 21,600 vph. Hacking seconds let you set time to the second.
- Case finish: brushed flanks plus polished bevels need two passes. One pass looks flat.
- Lume: BGW9 glows blue. Budget pigment glows green.
- Water resistance: gasket count and case back thread. Ask for a pressure test result. Few sellers hold one.
- Print: the IWC logo sits under the 12. Letters run 1.2 mm tall on the Mark XVIII.
