Judge a replica Mark XVIII by four checks: case size and thickness, dial print and date alignment, hand set and crystal, and movement type. The original is a 40 mm steel watch with a 20 mm lug width and the date at 3 o'clock. Ask for caliper photos and a movement photo before payment.

Start with the numbers
The genuine Mark XVIII (refs starting IW3270) measures 40 mm across, 11 mm thick, and 20 mm between the lugs. Water resistance is 6 bar. The crystal is sapphire with anti-reflective coating on both faces. The caseback carries an engraved Junkers Ju 52. A replica that lists 42 mm, or that measures 13 mm thick on a caliper, is a different watch with a different case.
Dial and date
- Date window sits at 3 o'clock, square, with a black date disc and white numerals.
- Print is thin and sharp. Thick, glossy print reads as a print fault.
- The triangle at 12 has two dots beside it. Check spacing against a reference photo.
- Applied numerals sit flush. Loose or tilted markers appear in low-grade builds.
Ask for a close photo of the date wheel at three different dates. Misaligned numbers mean the movement and dial are not matched.

Hands and crystal
The sword hands reach the minute track. Short hands are a common shortcut. The crystal is domed and clear from an angle; flat glass with a blue tint is not the same part. Lume on the genuine watch is Super-LumiNova on the hands and numerals.

Movement
The genuine caliber 35111 runs at 28,800 vph with a 42-hour power reserve. Most replicas use an Asian 2892 clone or a Miyota 9015, both at 28,800 vph. Ask for a photo of the rotor and the engraving. A plain, undecorated rotor signals an entry build. A 21,600 vph movement gives a smoother sweep and is not correct for this model.
Price and legal limits
The Mark XVIII retailed near $5,000 before IWC replaced it with the Mark XX in 2022. A replica at $80 will not match a replica at $400. In the US, trafficking in counterfeit goods violates 18 U.S.C. § 2320, and CBP seizes shipments. Know the rule before you order.
Checklist before payment
- Caliper photo of case diameter and thickness.
- Photo of the date wheel on three dates.
- Movement photo with rotor visible.
- Return policy in writing.
- Payment method with a dispute route.
