Genuine Saxonia dials are solid silver. Markers are solid gold. Copies use brass or a zinc alloy with printed markers or thin plated parts. Under a loupe, printed text on a copy shows thicker strokes and softer edges.
Movement
A. Lange & Söhne builds its calibers in Glashütte. The Saxonia Thin uses caliber L093.1, a hand-wound movement 2.9 mm thick with a 72-hour power reserve. The three-hand Saxonia uses caliber L941.1. Both carry a three-quarter plate in untreated German silver, screwed gold chatons, blued screws, and a balance cock engraved by hand.
Copies use movements from Chinese or Japanese suppliers. Some sellers add a decorative plate and printed engraving to mimic the Lange look. No public test data covers the rate or service life of these movements. Sellers list power reserves of 36 to 48 hours. Hand engraving on a Lange balance cock has no match at replica prices.
Service is a problem. Lange will not touch a copy. Independent watchmakers in the US charge $150 to $400 to clean a generic automatic or hand-wound movement, and some decline the work when parts are not available.
