Short answer
IWC does not build a watch named the Portofino 35. The number in the listing is the case diameter. A replica Portofino 35 copies the IWC Portofino dress watch with a case that measures 34mm to 35mm across. The genuine line covers the Portofino Automatic 34 and the Portofino Automatic 37. Both are stainless steel watches with a leather strap, a sapphire crystal and a small date window at 3 o'clock. No model in the line has luminous paint on the dial or hands.
Case and dimensions
Case diameter, thickness and lug width decide if the watch wears like the original. Measure all three with calipers.
- Diameter: 34mm to 35mm. Listings that say 35 often ship a 36mm case.
- Thickness: 8mm to 10mm. A 12mm case sits high on the wrist.
- Lug width: 17mm or 18mm. A 20mm strap on a 34mm case looks wrong.
- Lug to lug: about 39mm to 41mm. This number sets the fit more than diameter does.
IWC lists exact figures for each reference on its own product pages. Use those numbers as the baseline, not the seller text.
Movement
IWC fits Sellita-based automatic calibres to the Portofino line. Replica sellers use three movements.
- Seagull ST2130: 28,800 vph, about 38 hours of reserve. Clone of the ETA 2824-2. Parts are easy to find.
- Miyota 9015: 28,800 vph, about 42 hours. Made by Citizen. Thin and reliable.
- DG2813: 21,600 vph, about 40 hours. The budget option. The rotor is loud and the date change is slow.
A 28,800 vph movement sweeps in eight steps per second. A 21,600 vph movement shows six. That is the fastest way to tell the two apart without opening the case back.
Case, crystal and strap
Genuine Portofino cases use 316L stainless steel with a polished finish and a brushed case back. The crystal is sapphire with anti-reflective coating on both faces. Copies at the top of the market match this. Cheaper copies use mineral glass or coat one side only, which shows more glare.
Straps on the original are calf or alligator leather with a signed pin buckle. Copies use embossed leather with a stamped buckle. The stamping is shallow and the edges are raw.
Water resistance is the weak point on any copy. Gaskets and case back seals are not tested to the same standard. IWC rates its own cases. Do not assume the same rating on a replica. Keep it away from water.
Inspection list
- Wind the crown 20 turns. The rotor should turn without grinding.
- Set the time to 11:58 and watch the date flip. It should change within a few minutes of midnight, not at noon.
- Check the date window alignment. Misaligned numerals are common on the DG2813.
- Look at the dial under a lamp. Dust and fingerprints under the crystal mean the case was opened.
- Press the buckle. A thin, flexing tongue points to a low grade part.
Price
Replica Portofino watches sell from about $80 to $300. Below $80 the movement is almost always a DG2813 in a chrome-plated case. Above $250 the seller claims 904L steel, a Swiss movement or Swiss assembly. The Portofino is a simple three-hand watch, so the gap between tiers is small next to chronograph copies.
Legal status in the US
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. Section 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for an individual. Reselling a copy is trafficking. Buying one for personal use is a different charge, but U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy the shipment. There is no refund when that happens. CBP publishes seizure statistics each year. Watches and jewelry rank at the top of those categories by value.
