Short answer
A replica Top Gun pilot watch copies the look of the IWC Pilot's Watch Top Gun line and the chronographs seen in the 1986 and 2022 films. It is not an IWC watch. Replica case sizes run 41 mm to 46 mm. Movements are 7750 clones, Seagull ST19, or Miyota 9015. Price runs $80 to $400. No replica carries an IWC warranty or IWC service.
What "Top Gun" means on a watch face
Top Gun is the nickname of the US Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor course. The course started in 1969 at NAS Miramar, California. It moved to NAS Fallon, Nevada in 1996. IWC signed a license with the US Navy for the name and put "Top Gun" on a pilot chronograph in 2007. Case metal on that model is zirconium oxide ceramic. Diameter is 44 mm.
Film sources differ from brand sources. Reports on the 1986 film list a Porsche Design Orfina chronograph on the lead actor. Reports on the 2022 film list a Porsche Design Chronograph 1. IWC supplied watches for the 2022 production, but the watch on the lead actor in the cockpit scenes is not an IWC. Confirm this on your own if the film link matters to you.
Specs to compare
- Case: zirconium oxide ceramic, titanium, or PVD steel. Ceramic is light and resists scratches. Plated steel shows wear at the lugs and crown.
- Case size: 41 mm, 44 mm, and 46 mm exist. Chronograph copies run 14 mm to 16 mm thick. A 44 mm chronograph sits tall on a wrist under 7 inches.
- Crystal: sapphire with anti-reflective coating on one or both faces. Mineral glass is a downgrade. Mineral glass scratches on keys and doors.
- Dial: Super-LumiNova on hands and markers. Charge it under a lamp for two minutes, then check the glow in a dark room.
- Movement: Seagull ST19 is hand wound, 21,600 vph. Miyota 9015 is automatic, 28,800 vph. A 7750 clone is automatic with a chronograph, 28,800 vph.
- Water resistance: sellers list 60 m to 100 m. No test data comes with the watch. Do not swim with it.
Price bands
$80 to $150: mineral glass, plated case, quartz or a basic automatic. $150 to $250: sapphire crystal, 316L steel, Miyota 9015 or ST19. $250 to $400: ceramic or titanium case, 7750 clone chronograph, better dial printing. Prices change by seller and by batch. Two orders of the same model can ship with different parts.
Checks before you pay
- Ask for the movement name and a photo of the rotor or the balance wheel.
- Ask for case metal and case diameter in millimeters.
- Ask for a photo of the crystal edge at an angle. AR coating shows a blue or purple tint.
- Ask for the lug width. Most copies use 20 mm or 22 mm straps.
- Check the return window, the shipping method, and the payment type. Card payments give a chargeback path. Bank transfer does not.
Service and parts
A 7750 clone takes standard 7750 parts at most independent shops. A Miyota 9015 is a stock movement and is easy to replace. Ceramic cases cannot be polished. A chip in a ceramic case stays. Budget $60 to $120 for a service on a chronograph copy. Brand service centers do not take replicas.
Legal note
US law bars trafficking in counterfeit goods under 18 U.S.C. 2320. Customs and Border Protection can seize a shipment at the border. A replica is not the trademarked item and cannot be sold as one. Resale as genuine is a separate offense. Rules differ by country.
