The Short Answer
A replica Master Ultra Thin does not match the real watch, and the reason is mechanical. Jaeger-LeCoultre built this collection around movements that are thinner than the dial of an average watch. A copy has to hide a mass-produced movement inside the case, so the case grows. Buyers who measure a so-called super clone with calipers find it 1 to 3 mm thicker than the specification. For this watch, that difference is the entire product.
Why Thinness Is the Hard Part
The hand-wound Jaeger-LeCoultre caliber 849 measures 1.85 mm from mainplate to the top of the bridges and runs about 35 hours. That movement is not sold to third parties. Copy makers therefore fit a stock automatic unit that is two to three times thicker, then thin the caseback and the crystal to compensate. The proportions shift: the domed sapphire sits too high, the caseband loses its step, and the crown sits off center. A photo hides all of it. A wrist does not.
How to Check a Master Ultra Thin Before You Pay
- Measure the case across the caseback and crystal with digital calipers, then compare the number to the published specification for that reference.
- Set the watch against a known time source, let it run 24 hours, and check the rate. A serviced manufacture caliber holds a tight daily rate; a stock movement drifts.
- Inspect the dial under a loupe. Genuine indexes are applied and faceted with sharp edges. Copies use glued markers with soft, rounded edges.
- Look through the sapphire caseback. A genuine bridge layout shows Geneva stripes, blued screws, and a free-sprung balance. A copy shows a rotor or a decorative plate.
- Read the caseback engraving. Reference and serial numbers should be crisp, correctly aligned, and consistent with the papers.
- Weigh the watch. Thin cases in steel or gold fall into a narrow weight range. Plated brass cases fall outside it.
- Ask for service history. A watchmaker who has opened the case can tell you what movement is inside.
What the Genuine Watch Gives You
The line covers the Date, the Moon, and the Small Second, with case sizes from about 38 mm to 41 mm. The Master Ultra Thin Moon 39 measures roughly 9.9 mm because the moonphase disc adds height, while the hand-wound 1907 reference sits near 4 mm. Every version carries a manufacture movement, a signed crown, and a warranty that follows the watch. None of that transfers to a copy.
What a Copy Costs You Later
Jaeger-LeCoultre will not service a replica, and many independent watchmakers decline the work because replacement parts do not exist. Resale value is close to zero. Importing counterfeit goods into the United States is illegal, and Customs and Border Protection seizes shipments of counterfeit watches. When that happens, the buyer loses the watch and the money, with no refund and no recourse against the seller.
Buying the Real One Used
Secondary prices vary by reference, metal, and condition. Steel Date models sit at the entry point of the range, while moonphase and gold versions climb higher. Compare recent sold listings on a major auction platform before you commit. Request the box, papers, and a service invoice, and pay for an independent authentication from a watchmaker who handles Jaeger-LeCoultre. That step costs far less than a counterfeit, and it protects a purchase that holds value instead of destroying it.
