What the 510501 number means
IWC does not list a reference 510501 in its catalog. Sellers of replica watches use 510501 for the 46 mm Big Pilot line. The copy follows the IWC Big Pilot's Watch in case size, dial layout, and crown shape. Genuine references in that line run from IW5002 to IW5010. Case diameter is 46.2 mm. Thickness runs 15.8 mm to 16.2 mm. Lug width is 22 mm. Weight on a leather strap sits near 110 g to 130 g. A steel bracelet adds 70 g to 90 g.
Dial, case, and crown details
The dial is matte black with white printed Arabic numerals 1 through 12. Most versions show no small seconds. A date window sits at 3 o'clock. The crown is conical and oversized, about 9 mm across. Genuine watches use a soft iron inner case for antimagnetic protection. Copies use a plain steel spacer or a thin plated ring.
- Crystal: sapphire on the front of better copies, mineral glass on cheap ones. Anti-reflective coating on the inside on genuine watches. Many copies coat one side.
- Case back: engraved with a reference number, a movement number, and text. Engraving depth is shallow on low-grade units.
- Lume: bright at first on most copies. Fades within 30 to 60 minutes.
- Hands: sword shape, white or rhodium plated. Print edges look ragged under a 10x loupe.
Movements found in copies
Three movement families show up in replica Big Pilot 510501 watches.
- Asian 21-jewel automatic, sold as A21J. Power reserve 36 to 42 hours. Some units do not hack.
- Seagull ST25 or ST2130. Power reserve 38 to 45 hours. Smoother winding than the A21J.
- Decorated 23-jewel or 24-jewel with a rotor engraved to look like IWC caliber 51111 or 52110.
No replica movement holds a 7-day reserve. Genuine caliber 52110 runs 168 hours on two barrels. Listings that claim 7 days should come with a movement photo and a timed run result.
Checks before you pay
- Ask for the case diameter with calipers in the photo.
- Confirm the crystal material in writing.
- Check that the date flips at midnight, not at 11 p.m.
- Ask the power reserve in hours, not in days.
- Request a photo of the case back engraving.
Care
Wind the crown 20 to 30 turns after a full stop. Set the date with the crown pulled to position two, then push in and set the time. Keep the watch away from magnets, speakers, and phone cases. Water resistance on copies is often untested. Do not swim with one. Service the movement every 3 to 5 years, or when the rate drifts past 20 seconds a day.
