What the ref 222 is
Vacheron Constantin launched the 222 in 1977 for its 222nd anniversary. Jörg Hysek designed the case. The line covered steel, yellow gold, and two-tone versions. The case measures 37 mm across, crown excluded. The movement is caliber 1121, an ultra-thin automatic built on the Jaeger-LeCoultre 920 base. Production stopped around 1985.

Seven checks that catch most fakes
- Case width. Genuine cases measure 37 mm. Replica cases land at 39 mm to 41 mm because builders reuse a larger case.
- Maltese cross. On the original, the cross sits on the case at the 5 o'clock position. It is applied and polished, with sharp inner corners. Fakes stamp or etch the mark, so edges look soft.
- Bezel notches. The notches are cut into the bezel and follow the case line. Some copies ship a flat bezel with a printed ring.
- Bracelet. The first links taper from the case. Each link is milled, with flat top faces and defined edges. Fake bracelets use folded sheet metal, stamped clasps, and gaps at the end links.
- Movement. Caliber 1121 is thin, automatic, and finished with Geneva stripes. Copies carry quartz movements or basic automatics. Date wheels do not match the dial font.
- Dial. Markers sit at even heights. The signature and the date window frame match period photos. Copies reprint text at the wrong weight.
- Case back. The 1977 original uses a solid screw back. The 2022 re-edition has a sapphire display back. Fakes mix the two. Confirm the back style against period photos for the exact reference.
Verification steps
- Request the extract from the archives. Vacheron Constantin issues this document for vintage watches. It lists the reference, the movement number, and the delivery date.
- Match the case number and the movement number to the archive record.
- Open the case with a watchmaker. Check the movement finish, the rotor engraving, and the calibre number.
- Measure the case with calipers. Photos distort proportions. Calipers do not.
- Weigh the watch head and bracelet on a scale, then compare against a known original. I found no published factory weight, so a direct comparison beats any number from a listing.
- Compare dial printing with photographs from auction houses and the Vacheron Constantin archive.
Price and paperwork
Steel 222 watches from the original run sell at auction in the high five figures to six figures in US dollars, based on condition and completeness. The 2022 Historiques 222 launched at a five-figure retail price. Confirm current figures with an auction house or a dealer, since I have not verified today's numbers. A seller asking a fraction of those levels for an original is a signal to walk away.
What copies get right
Replica makers now ship 37 mm cases, sapphire crystals, and clone movements with a rotor shape close to the original. A listing photo set can look near-correct. Dial printing, bracelet finishing, and movement construction remain the weak points. Buy on measurement and inspection, not on photography.
