What fake Portofino 37 means

The Portofino 37 is IWC Schaffhausen's 37mm automatic dress watch, sold under references in the IW4586 family. A fake Portofino 37 is a counterfeit copy of it, and nearly all of them come from a small number of Chinese workshops. If you are trying to work out whether the watch in your hand is real, the answer almost always lives in three places: the dial printing, the caseback engraving, and the movement. Those are the parts that cost money to get right, and they are the parts replicas get wrong.

  • Case: 37mm diameter, about 9.4mm thick, stainless steel or gold
  • Movement: IWC caliber 35111, built on a Sellita SW300-1 base, roughly 42 hours of power reserve
  • Dial: Roman numerals, leaf-shaped Feuille hands, date window at 3 o'clock
  • Crystal: sapphire, lightly domed on many versions
  • Strap: alligator or Santoni leather on a signed pin buckle
  • Water resistance: 3 bar, so splash protection only

The tells on a replica

Copies of the Portofino 37 are better than they were five years ago, partly because there is less to copy than on a chronograph. A few things still stand out, under a loupe or in plain light.

fake portofino 37 vs

  • Date font. Genuine numerals are thin and slightly condensed. Copies use a fatter, wider font that sits too low or too high in the window.
  • Hand shape. Feuille hands are faceted and polished, with a crisp spine down the middle. Replicas are flat, painted, and blunt at the tip.
  • Dial printing. Study the kerning between the letters in SCHAFFHAUSEN. Genuine printing is razor-sharp at magnification. Copies look stamped, because they are.
  • Caseback engraving. Real engraving has depth and a bright cut edge. Most fakes are shallow and laser-etched, and the reference number often does not match the dial layout.
  • Crown. The IWC logo should be raised and polished. A painted or faint crown is a bad sign.
  • Strap and buckle. Real alligator shows scale structure. Copies use embossed cowhide, and the buckle engraving is soft.

The movement is where it gets obvious

Almost every fake Portofino 37 runs a cheap Chinese automatic, a Miyota 9015, or a low-grade Sellita clone. If the model has a display back, you can see it without opening anything. Genuine IWC finishing is clean and consistent, with proper perlage, polished screws, and a rotor engraved to match the reference. Copies show rough edges, uneven striping, and a rotor with generic text. A watchmaker can confirm the movement in minutes, and that settles the question faster than any photo comparison.

What replicas do get right

Worth saying straight: the case proportions on a decent Portofino 37 copy are close, and from arm's length most people will not notice. That is why the tell sits in the details rather than the silhouette. It is also why the 37mm size is harder to fake well. The dial is small enough that any error in printing or hand shape gets magnified instead of hidden.

The legal side, in the US

Counterfeit watches are illegal to import and to sell in the United States. Customs and Border Protection seizes them, and selling them carries trademark liability. If you were sold a watch as genuine and it is not, that is fraud, and you have a claim against the seller. If you bought a replica knowing what it was, the risk is yours, and resale is where people get into real trouble.

Before you buy, or before you keep it

Ask for the reference number, the serial, and clear macro photos of the dial, caseback, and crown. Check the reference against IWC's published specifications for the Portofino Automatic 37. If the seller cannot or will not provide paperwork, that is your answer. If you already own the watch, an independent watchmaker's inspection costs far less than the doubt.
